These wines offer far more complexity and interest and make better food wines than the usual stainless-steel tank-fermented Semillon Sauvignon Blanc blends. They take this blend wines to a higher plane usually reserved for fine barrel fermented Chardonnays and well worth hunting down.

Established in 1999, Fraser Gallop Estate is at the heart of Margaret River’s Wilyabrup valley (20km) north of the town of Margaret river and six kilometres from the south west coast of Western Australia. The Estate enjoys splendid isolation and a moderate maritime climate created by the Indian Ocean to the north and west.

At Fraser Gallop, we have used a few different formats of barrels from 500L puncheons, 265L cigar barrels and 284 L stainless steel barrels and the Bordeaux 225L Export barrel. The idea of spreading the Sauvignon Blanc lees in the barrel has merit as the thiol content of Sauvignon Blanc is high and more lees contact in the wine is beneficial.

A luminescent pale straw green colour in the glass. Lime, snow peas, passionfruit, vanilla and gooseberry. A lovely lemon-lime citrus freshness in the mouth and a hint of fennel. The creamy vanilla texture from extended barrel maturation gives the wine a long textural finish to soften the acidity a touch.

Vintage started late due to the cooler and wetter conditions. Flowering was patchy, setting the scene for lower than average yields. Some early summer rains helped to restore freshness and volume to the grapes. Vintage was delayed by 2 weeks; however, the cooler season saw fruit with slower sugar accumulation and more intense flavour development. February remained dry and the cooler conditions continued into March with little rain. We netted the whole vineyard as we do each year to reduce bird damage. The quality of the juice was superb with bright fresh fruit flavours. A small portion of Semillon was fermented in older oak to add texture and interest to the blend.

This is right at the top of the region’s offering once again with a complex, sophisticated delivery of fresh, lemon and lime aromas, as well as a gently flinty, stony edge. The palate is drenched in fresh, tart and tangy citrus fruit and delivers a succulent, tropical fruit-tinged finish. Drink over the next six years.
