Driftwood Estate is a boutique winery set in the stunning Wilyabrup sub-region of Margaret River, Western Australia. Established by Tom and Helen Galopoulos in 1989 on what had previously been a country retreat, the winery immediately received acclaim when its first wine, a Semillon produced in 1993, won a special commendation in a British competition.

Description

Harvest of our premium Chardonnay commenced on the 31st January and continued through early February followed closely by the remaining white varietals. Whites were fermenting away as the first reds started coming in by the 21st of February. The weather was glorious through the end of February and March allowing the flavours to marry with the sugar levels in the grapes. Malbec and Shiraz proved fruitful and vibrant then patience was rewarded with excellent varietal expression throughout the Cabernet and Merlot. Another vintage to remember from Margaret River. All the grapes were in by the end of March and we then could relax and allow the second half of Autumn to roll by without a worry in the world – well except the COVID-19 pandemic….

Winemaking

The malbec batch came in clean and vibrant on the 21st of February with analytical specs of: 13.3 °Be, 7.0 g/L TA and 3.55 pH. The Malbec was machine harvested in the cool of the early morning and crushed to static fermenters. Colour and phenolics were gently extracted using aerative and closed pump over techniques. The batch was co-inoculated for MLF and pressed off skins at or around 0°Be. Once primary fermentation and MLF were completed in tank the wine was transferred to a mixture of new and old French oak barrels and a stainless steel tank with French oak staves for 14 months maturation. The wine was then blended in May 2021 before being filtered in preparation for bottling in early June 2021.
